PAPERS

At least 3 different kinds of papers are used by lion makers. One kind is for binding; it has parallel lines running through the paper. The other kinds are for pasting onto the finished framework. Ultra-traditional craftspersons insist on using a combination of two different papers for pasting. They insist it results in a stronger lion. One is ordinary pasting paper, which has visible fibers scattered randomly. It gets the job done. The second type of pasting paper is yu kou pasting paper. You can almost hear how strong your lion will become when you unfold sheets of this kind of paper. Yu kou paper gives the pasted paper layers a crispy, snappy strength that lion connoisseurs insist upon.
There are different schools of thought on using fabric, gauze, netting, fiberglass or other materials in making the blanks. The decision to use those kinds of materials is best left up to the individual artist.
