Craftsman’s Corner
The Chinese revere bamboo for its innumerable uses and benefits to our lives. In art, bamboo represents steadfastness and loyal friendship. In society, bamboo makes life more convenient, it houses us and nourishes our bodies. Professional lion makers speak of using bamboo strips as if they were alive. They “listen” to each strip of bamboo, and choose the appropriate strip to serve their purpose. They “tame” each strip of bamboo, bending it to their will using tools reminiscent of the 5 Elements (fire, wood, earth, metal and water).
The use of rattan in making lions is also quite popular. Its strength and resilience makes it an excellent substitute for many, but not all, of bamboo’s uses.
