RED SCROLLS

Red scrolls are presented by lions at the climax of lion dances. They always convey auspicious, heaven-sent messages and good wishes. You work hard to make your lion dancing impressive. Insist that your red scrolls impress your audience as well. The beauty of using our scrolls is that you keep them and use them again and again, year after year. For that human touch, our scrolls feature hand-cut, lustrous golden characters based on the art of master calligraphers, not computer-generated Chinese fonts. Choose from our extensive selection of occasion-specific and general-purpose scrolls, or send us your desired characters and size specifications to have your scroll custom made.

Performer’s Corner

Using the right scroll for the right occasion
Unfurling a lucky scroll can be an important part of every lion dance. It can substitute for or be used in addition to the act of scattering lettuce. It also signals the climax of the performance to audience members; even those who cannot read the characters know to applaud when the words are revealed. When an appropriate scroll is presented by the lion, it speaks highly of the team members' education. However, if the words don’t match the occasion, audience members make their own assumptions about the performers’ I.Q.s.

True story: At a recent wedding banquet, a highly-regarded lion dance group concluded their performance by displaying a scroll with a saying usually spoken during the Lunar New Year. Smiles at the head table turned into uneasy grins, knit brows, and puzzled looks. Even though the performance was fantastic, the hosts and the guests remembered the inappropriate choice of words on the scroll. Better to not use a red scroll at all than to have your lion spit out the wrong one.

Every lion dance group should invest in at least a few red scrolls. One for grand openings / prosperous business, one for the new year, one for red egg and ginger parties, one for general use, and one or two for weddings.
